Development of a transdermal contraceptive patch

Challenge: Cygnus Inc had identified an opportunity to develop a contraceptive patch in partnership with a major pharmaceutical company.  Dr Soni was assigned the responsibility of developing the formulation, design and process for the 7-day transdermal system.

Solution: Dr Soni led the formulation and process development team to develop the transdermal system to meet the target product profile.  A unique combination of materials science, pharmaceutical science and process development approach was applied to address the significant challenges encountered during development.

Result: The transdermal system was successfully developed and transferred to the partner.  The product, Evra, was launched in 2002 as the first transdermal contraceptive system on the market.
