Development of an automatic, non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring system

Challenge: Cygnus Inc had demonstrated feasibility of continuous glucose monitoring using reverse iontophoresis to extract interstitial fluid across the skin.  As Vice President of Engineering, Dr Soni was assigned the responsibility of developing the sensor design, manufacturing process and custom equipment for the manufacture of the GlucoWatch sensor.

Solution: Dr Soni led a team of mechanical and electrical engineers, physical chemists and biochemists.  The team worked with Research, Marketing and QA/QC groups, and contract design firms to develop the design, process and manufacturing equipment for the sensor.

Result: The GlucoWatch Biographer was successfully launched in 2002.  It was the first continuous glucose monitoring system on the market that provided trends and pattern data to the user.
